These two wonderful pieces were written for the Hartzell Hilton Band, a group dedicated to new music for E-flat clarinets and violas. The odd series of titles refers both to an instruction in a Mahler symphony (mit Wüt, meaning “with rage”) and an Essex-girl pronunciation of “what?”. Hence WUT. The “no way, shitface” subtitle came about in a discussion about American slang. WUT Again? is a pretty barcarolle featuring alternating melodic statements by each instrumental group and an eight-bar performed rest. NOT WUT AGAIN! (no way, shitface!) begins with busy action music, but ends in a gorgeous revelatory sunrise. This release is in honour of John’s 80th birthday.
