A Window Opened on a Distant World was commissioned by the University of Redlands Wind Ensemble, a student band. The instrumentation I chose was double wind quintet (two flutes, oboes, clarinets, bassoons and horns) and piano since this seemed to offer many sonic possibilities without being too complex to compose or rehearse. It was understood that I would play the piano part (I was living in Redlands at the time) and I decided that the piano would take very much a subsidiary role, providing mostly ostinatos and the bass line where needed. There are six sections in the piece. The present recording is of the first performance.
