My Sudoku Music is a series of pieces, 137 in total, mostly composed between 2005 and 2009 and nearly all using sounds found in Apple’s GarageBand software. In each piece I decided the basic constituents (sound sources, overall duration) but the smaller details - placement of sounds, repetition, silences, sometimes panning and volume levels - were determined by random means, by studying numbers in hexadecimal sudoku puzzles in the earlier pieces, by random number tables in the later ones. Sudoku 104, made in 2009, uses two synth patches and the spoken words which are available in GarageBand. [Christopher Hobbs]
